8th KaraFilm Festival ‘Deferred’

The KaraFilm Society deeply regrets announcing the deferment, for the time being, of the 8th KaraFilm Festival – the Karachi International Film Festival 2010. The Festival was originally scheduled to take place January 21 – 31, 2010 in Karachi.

The prevailing global economic recession and conditions within Pakistan have meant that we have been confronted with a severe cutback in financial support, which has made it impossible to organize the Festival in the manner worthy of an international film festival or to the standards expected by our loyal audiences. We fully realize that the decision to defer would be a disappointing one both for filmmakers and to thousands of people who were looking forward to the Festival in January but, despite our best efforts up until the last minute, the painful decision simply could not be avoided.

We would also to clarify that the preparations for the Festival had been on-going since March 2009 and most of the content planning for the Festival – such as the selection of films to be included, filmmakers to be invited, publicity design approvals and the booking of venues – had already been completed. In addition, coordination with government and law enforcement agencies for the provision of permissions and security was also well underway. The decision to defer the Festival has been due solely to the lack of financial resources in a time of rising costs.

The new dates for the 8th KaraFilm Festival will be communicated in due course. Until that time, we hope to put together other smaller film-related events and activities. We thank you for your patience and look forward to your continued support to Pakistan’s premiere international film festival.
